Basic network configuration can be done using
the Network Setup Assistant. Additional or advanced configuration
is done in Network preferences. Configuration and connection to
remote networks through PPP, PPPoE, and VPN is done with Internet
Connect.

Static IP addresses are those that are manually
set in Network preferences. The computer always uses the same
address. Dynamic addresses are those that are either assigned by a
DHCP server, or when a DHCP server is unavailable, created by the
computer. Unlike static addresses, a dynamic address is not
permanent and will change.

Ping, Lookup, Traceroute, and Port Scan aid in
troubleshooting.

Ping sends signals to another computer on the
Internet to see if that computer echoes.

Traceroute traces the route through the Internet
from your computer to the destination computer and shows the number
of hops needed to make the journey. This is useful in determining
where any network delays are occurring.

You can use Port Scan to determine if certain
ports that should be open are in fact open.
