RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)

Software or hardware system that uses two or more disk drives at the same time to improve fault tolerance and performance.

Rendezvous

Former name for Apple's implementation of the Zeroconf protocol.

receipt

A bundle that acts as a record of what was installed by the Mac OS X Installer. The receipts are stored in /Library/Receipts.

resource fork

root (user)

Short name for System Administrator. Root has read and write permissions to all areas of the file system.

root (file system)

Beginning of a file path. The root of the file system is designated by /.

router

Gateway between two networks that determines the next network point to which networking information should be forwarded, on the way toward its destination.

RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol)

A networking protocol used to transmit, or stream, QuickTime data.

RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol)

A networking protocol used for two-way communication with a unicast streaming server.
